For adults without a known history of cardiovascular disease it is more accurate to assess cardiovascular disease risk on the basis of the combined effect of multiple risk factors (absolute CVD risk) than the use of individual risk factors because the cumulative effects of multiple risk factors may be additive or synergistic.
In Australia, 64% of the adult population have 3 or more modifiable risk factors. As cardiovascular disease is largely preventable, an approach focusing on comprehensive risk assessment will enable effective management of identified modifiable risk factors through lifestyle changes and, where needed, pharmacological therapy.
The COACH Program uses the official Australian guideline for the prevention of cardiovascular disease in people without cardiovascular disease to reduce their risk of developing cardiovascular disease in the future.
